Ch and tch both have the same sound /ch/ , hence the confusion. But there is a teeny tiny secret which wil help your child decide which to use when.
Just 2 things to remember:
· If the ending follows a VOWEL, we end the word with “tch” Example: pitch, itch
· If the ending follows a CONSONANT, we end the word with “ch” Example: punch, inch
Try using the above pointers with these words:
bunch, fetch, notch, match, stitch, lunch, ranch, patch, inch, speech (ee is not a vowel but a digraph), itch, catch, inch, branch
But the few rule breakers are – attach, bachelor, which etc.
Give your kids enough practice with different words, each time reiterating the rule.
