For cognitive stimulation, it is better sometimes to leave baby on his own (not physically alone!). They develop and are source of stimulation on their own too.

“Repeating chance behaviour” is one such act which babies do on their own. Around one month, babies start to gain voluntary control over their actions through the primary circular reaction, by repeating chance behaviour largely motivated by their needs. This leads to some simple motor habits, such as sucking their fists or thumbs. Around 2-2.5 months, baby sees his hands touch, open and close. He tries to repeat these movements in a primary circular reaction that helps him gain voluntary control over his behaviour.
A simple prop which can be of great use is black and white wrist bands and socks available in market (and @ amazon too).
These have some coloured small stuff toy like face/characters stitched on them to provide not only that extra stimulation to babies’ visual and cognitive systems but also keeps them engaged for good amount of time.
