By closely and sensitively observing your baby, you will come to understand him better. You will be able to truly appreciate all that he is doing and learning. The bottle or breast may quiten his cry, but what if he is neither hungry nor sleepy. All he wants is you & your physical touch! Hence, slow down, take time, pause and observe your baby before rushing to feed or make him sleep.
This will help you to respond more accurately to his needs. You may be wondering, “I never take my eyes off my baby.” But observing is very different from looking and watching. It needs you to quieten yourself, be patient, be in the moment and try to see your baby as an individual with his own set of unique ways. This surely takes time and practice, but is worth the effort. By silently and sensitively observing your baby; in his crib, in your arms, or while he is playing on the floor – you will get to know him better.
