Sentence Making - A Quicky!!

Writer's picture: Manika ShahManika Shah

For a pretty young phonics learner, after all the sounds, digraphs and tricky words (maximum) are introduced and practised enough (including the blending and segmenting of 4/5 letter words), it’s time to move on to sentence making. Rather, the day you introduce your first tricky/sight/high frequency word, you can start with simple, basic sentences using that tricky word. This not only gives sufficient exposure to that tricky world but at the same time introduces the dynamics and working of sentences too.

This info graph will help you help your beginner writer in understanding sentences. It highlights 4 important pointers to keep in mind when writing. It always helps if they are introduced right at the time of introducing sentences.

Briefly, the 4 essential pointers are :

1. Starting the sentence with a capital letter.

2. Leaving a finger space between words to avoid bumping.

3. Putting the correct punctuation mark at the end - full stop or a question mark.

4. Checking if the sentence makes any sense or has a meaning.

HOW TO USE

Keep this handy when you sit with your child to work on sentences. Show it to them, explain them. After every sentence, make it a point to check on these 4 parameters using the info graphic.

For few days, let the child see this again and again till he memories these pointers and is confident enough in rechecking on his own.

Hope this helps your little one bloom beautifully into a writer!!!
